Sunderland Elementary School

OUR SCHOOL

Sunderland Elementary School is a special place. The children come to school ready and excited to learn. The staff is dedicated to making every child’s school experience a success. And our families are very supportive of their children and our school.

All parties are committed to achieving our mission as a safe, child-centered environment with a focus on high expectations for student learning. Academic, social and emotional growth for all Sunderland students is achieved through developmentally appropriate curriculum and effective practices delivered by a nurturing staff in close partnership with parents.

Sunderland has a rich tradition of academic performance and our school continues to evolve as we focus on achieving our mission. As we emerge from the pandemic, we have placed an added emphasis on the social emotional learning at our school. Students take part in developing the routines and class guidelines that make the learning community successful. There is a collaborative approach and the learning extends beyond the classroom through field trips and project based learning. Two years ago, the school invested in creating a ‘maker space’ classroom to provide a place for this work.

Our parents, meanwhile, have banded together to create opportunities for the Sunderland Elementary community to celebrate our success. Family gatherings and dances at school allow our school community to bond and flourish. Group participation at events like the Manchester Tractor Parade, demonstrate our connection outside the classroom.

All of us at Sunderland are proud of our achievement in the Positive Behavior Interventionists and Supports (PBIS) program. We were recently recognized by Vermont as a “PBIS School of Recognition.” One of only 43 in the state of Vermont and the only school designated for this honor in Bennington County. The award acknowledged our work in “prioritizing social, emotional, behavioral learning and well-being to achieve success for all learners.”
